What Is
Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a condition that affects the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, causing it to thin and bulge into a cone-like shape.

This irregular shape can cause blurred and distorted vision, making it difficult to perform daily activities like driving, reading, or watching television. It can also make it difficult to wear traditional contact lenses.

What Causes Keratoconus?

The exact cause of keratoconus is unknown, but it’s believed to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some factors that may contribute to the development of keratoconus include:

  • Family history of the condition
  • Eye rubbing
  • Chronic eye irritation or inflammation
  • Connective tissue disorders, such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or Marfan syndrome

Symptoms of Keratoconus

The signs and symptoms of keratoconus can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some common symptoms include:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
  • Halos or ghosting around lights
  • Eye redness or swelling

Scleral Lenses
for Keratoconus

Scleral lenses are a popular strategy for addressing the effects keratoconus can have on your vision and eye comfort.

These lenses are larger than traditional contacts and rest on the sclera (whites) of your eyes. Because of their size, the center of the lens “vaults” over your cornea to help provide comfort while living with keratoconus. The space between your lens and eye also acts as a tear reservoir to help soothe your eyes if you struggle with issues like dry eye.

We’ve been fitting scleral lenses for years and know firsthand how it can help people just like you enjoy clear, comfortable sight. If you’re interested to know more about scleral lenses, please get in touch with us today.

Additional Keratoconus
Strategies

Treatment for keratoconus is focused on improving visual acuity and slowing or halting the progression of the condition. While scleral lenses are a fantastic way to help address keratoconus, it might not be the best solution for your needs.

Other strategies can include RGP contact lenses and corneal cross-linking. However, we may refer you to a ophthalmologist to perform corneal cross-linking.

Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses

Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses can help correct visual errors caused by early-to-mid keratoconus cases. However, if the issue progresses, we might look at scleral lenses as an alternative strategy.

These lenses surpass the size of conventional contacts and sit on the sclera (whites) of your eyes. Due to their larger dimensions, the central part of the lens arches over your cornea, ensuring enhanced comfort for individuals with keratoconus. Furthermore, the gap between the lens and your eye serves as a reservoir for tears, offering relief for conditions such as dry eye.

Corneal cross-linking is a minimally invasive procedure that involves applying a special solution to the cornea and exposing it to ultraviolet light to strengthen the corneal tissue.
