Preserve Your Vision
from The Silent Thief of Sight

Glaucoma is often known as the “silent thief of sight” because it can gradually damage your vision without noticeable symptoms until its advanced stages. However, by detecting and managing this condition as early as possible, we could help preserve your vision.

Learn more about glaucoma here, or get the help you need when you book an appointment with us. Our Merrillville location also proudly offers laser glaucoma treatments to help those currently living with the disease.

What Is
Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain.

This damage is often associated with high intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye), but it can develop even if pressure levels are within normal ranges. If left untreated, glaucoma could lead to further complications.

Types of Glaucoma

Different types of glaucoma include open-angle glaucoma, closed-angle glaucoma, and normal-tension glaucoma.

Each type has distinct characteristics and requires specific management strategies. We can determine which one you might have when you visit us for a comprehensive eye exam.

Open-Angle Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma. It occurs when the eye’s drainage angle becomes partially blocked, resulting in a gradual increase in intraocular pressure.

Over time, this pressure damages the optic nerve and leads to possible vision loss. Open-angle glaucoma progresses slowly and may not exhibit symptoms until significant damage has occurred.

Closed-angle glaucoma, also known as angle-closure glaucoma, occurs when the drainage angle of the eye closes, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure.

This type of glaucoma requires immediate medical attention as it can cause a sudden onset of severe symptoms, including eye pain, headache, blurred vision, and even nausea or vomiting.

Normal-tension glaucoma, also called low-tension or normal-pressure glaucoma, is a type of glaucoma where optic nerve damage occurs despite having normal intraocular pressure.

The exact cause of normal-tension glaucoma is not fully understood, but possibly involves reduced blood flow to the optic nerve or increased sensitivity of the optic nerve to pressure changes.

How Do We Detect It?

Detecting glaucoma early is crucial for preserving your vision. At Moses Eyecare, we utilize modern diagnostic techniques to detect and monitor glaucoma. During your comprehensive eye exam, our experienced optometrists will perform a series of tests, including measuring your intraocular pressure, assessing the health of your optic nerve, and evaluating your visual field.

Additionally, we may employ technologies such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) to obtain detailed images of your optic nerve and retinal structure. These tests help us identify signs of glaucoma and track any changes in your eye health over time.

Treating Glaucoma

Your glaucoma treatment depends on various factors, including glaucoma type and severity, overall eye health, and individual needs, but our team at Moses Eyecare will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your condition.

Regular monitoring is crucial in managing glaucoma, and we will book follow-up appointments to monitor the disease’s progression, assess the chosen treatment’s effectiveness, and make any necessary adjustments to provide the best possible outcome for your eye health.

While there is no cure for glaucoma, early detection and proper management can slow down its progression and preserve your remaining vision.

Eye Drops

Prescription eye drops are commonly used to lower intraocular pressure and reduce the risk of further damage to the optic nerve.

Your eye doctor may prescribe oral medications to lower intraocular pressure and manage glaucoma.

Laser treatments, such as laser trabeculoplasty, can help improve fluid drainage from the eye and lower intraocular pressure.

Our Merrillville location offers laser trabeculoplasty. Please get in touch with us if you’d like to know more about this procedure and how it could help you!

In advanced cases or when other treatment options are ineffective, surgical interventions may be necessary to create new drainage channels or implant drainage devices.
